Square Enix’s attempt at giving Final Fantasy VII a pre-Disney Star Wars-style expanded universe - the so-called Compilation of Final Fantasy VII - has been largely ignored too, with one merciful exception: the well-received 2008 PlayStation Portable prequel Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Several more obscure titles were perhaps too blurry in the cultural memory to be worth including, like Final Fantasy XII’s semi-forgotten Nintendo DS sequel Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, the GameCube exclusive Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, and spinoff-to-a-spinoff Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and its own sequel Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift. Final Fantasy X-2 was snubbed, a significant exclusion considering its pop music fixation and the inclusion of other direct sequels to main entries. The new library is impressive, though not totally exhaustive. Many of the soundtracks have Japanese metadata, but if you’re used to listening to them in massive, compressed, three-hour YouTube videos, then this will still be a godsend. Even numerous spin-off titles like Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy Type-0, and, for some reason, the free-to-play mobile app Final Fantasy Brave Exvius are on tap. Both original and updated track lists for early entries like Final Fantasy IV that received remasters on later hardware are included.

The mass upload includes the soundtracks to the entire main Final Fantasy series up to Final Fantasy XV, including the two sequels to Final Fantasy XIII, and separate entries for the various expansions to online multiplayer entries Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV. One thing, at least, is especially clear to me right now: Nobuo Uematsu is a legend and we owe him (and his successors) a debt for these tunes.A nearly complete catalogue of Final Fantasy soundtracks was quietly added to Spotify today. This is a game series that’s not only managed to survive since the 1980s, but thrive - and not just because of childhood nostalgia, but because most of the games have been consistently good or at least interesting.Īnd heck, even if you hated the entire Final Fantasy series, I find it hard to believe you couldn’t listen to this beautiful music. If nothing else, it reminds us just how long and rich the history of Final Fantasy is.
Most of the soundtracks are written by longtime series composer Nobuo Uematsu, though one of my favorites has to be Yoko Shimomura’s score for Final Fantasy XV. Other than that, the gang’s pretty much all here: Crisis Core, Spirits Within, Dissidia Duodecim, even Brave Exvius (that bizarre mobile game that costarred Ariana Grande). Also, it’s not officially a Final Fantasy game, but I’m a little bit sad FF-adjacent Square Enix JRPG Bravely Default isn’t among the cohort because that game’s soundtrack is a blast.
I skimmed the entire catalogue on Spotify, and the only main-ish game I couldn’t find was Final Fantasy X-2 I also couldn’t find the soundtrack for the film Advent Children. Square Enix hasn’t given a reason for this release, though I suspect it might have something to do with the rumor that we’ll be seeing more of the Final Fantasy VII Remake at E3 this weekend. None of these albums has been officially available on either Spotify or Apple Music - or any digital service I can think of - before. Whatever genre of video game soundtrack you wanted, it’s probably in here somewhere. Several of the track listings are in Japanese, which is tricky if you’re looking for something specific - but then again, if you’re feeling lucky, you could close your eyes, click a couple of times, and stand a good chance of hitting a great song. We’re talking as far back as the original NES Final Fantasy, all the way up to the dozens of songs from Final Fantasy XIV. If you’re putting together a video game music playlist and are in the mood for some JRPG classics, Square Enix just made it very easy for you, as the soundtracks for almost every Final Fantasy game have just popped up on Spotify and Apple Music.Īnd considering the Final Fantasy series has been around since roughly the mid-Triassic period, that means Square Enix just added a lot of soundtracks.
